The Virginia Declaration of Rights was the forerunner of the Bill of Rights. Thomas Jefferson also drew heavily on this document when he wrote the Declaration of Independence.

Stuart earned a fortune producing replicas of the three portraits he painted from life of the first President of the United States. The Frick canvas is thought to be one of two copies painted by the artist for the Philadelphia merchant John Vaughan.
